Bullying: Dad Threatens Bullies

Posted by:

Despite an increase in anti-bullying legislation, bullying is not easing up. While administrators and advocates pass law upon law against bullying behavior, children continue to be bullied.

James Jones got so frustrated, he boarded the bus where the kids bullying his daughter were riding. While I can’t sanction his behavior, I can understand his frustration. You can read the full story here.

What’s disturbing is the comment; “officials say he crossed the line between concern for his daughter and the rights of the kids not to be threatened.” No mention is made of his daughters right not to be threatened or assaulted by a condom. No mention is made of appropriate action the bus driver “should” have taken or union restrictions on what he was allowed to do.

Laws don’t stop or change the offending behavior.

Rather than continue to focus on passing laws, advocates and administrators should worry more about addressing and dealing with inappropriate behavior.

While passing anti-bullying laws may make victims feel validated and administrators feel valuable, they focus too much on administration and less on change.

Bullying is like pornography, difficult to define and even harder to prove.

Had the school heard and acted on Mr Jones complaint, there’s a better chance his son would have stopped being the target of bullies.

Teaching and modeling appropriate behavior is a start. And I believe standing up for your child is a cause for celebration, not arrest. Perhaps we should point out the school district’s inability to handle the situation and celebrate the father’s courage to take action
