Executive Protection: Get Your Affairs In Order

Posted by:

When executives inquire how best to protect themselves while on the road, one of my first responses is:

Get your affairs in order.

In the event something did happen to you while on the road, it’s essential that you have your affairs arranged to minimize the impact on your friends and family.

Some things to consider as part of your pre-trip logistics are:

  • Itinerary. Have you shared it with your trusted advisor(s) and family.
  • Credit. Do you have ample credit on the cards you’re bringing. Americans have been arrested overseas for exceeding their credit limits. This is a simple step to avoid a huge hassle.
  • Insurance. Do your personal property, health and other related policies cover you while in a foreign country. Don’t assume, check.
  • Legal. Wills, Power of Attorney, Trusts, Insurance and other essential documents should be organized and placed in the care of a suitable professional or family friend. Make sure more than one person knows about them.

Finally, if traveling internationally, consider registering your travel with the US State Department (US Citizens) so that you may be contacted if necessary.

The impact of typhoons, earthquakes and other natural disasters can be minimized or avoided with enough advance warning or emergency evacuation information.

US Citizens, and executives seeking greater protection, can register with the US State Department here.
