Self defense tailored specifically for women is a growing trend.
When I first ventured into this field years ago, the same tactics were taught to men and women alike.
Self defense has evolved over the years as information about the nature of assaults becomes more widespread. In this information age, awareness has grown tremendously, to the benefit of the potential victim.
What used to be an industry dominated by men, is more and more, being shifted to accommodate women and their unique situation.
Sure, men still like the self defense strategies that make them feel like Bruce Lee or Jason Bourne. But, times are changing and fortunately, self defense strategies for women are changing too.
Take, for example, Rice University recently created a defensive tactic class just for women (here’s the article). It’s a given that men are generally physically stronger then women. Men are usually the perpetrators of violent crime against women. It makes sense that women get a specialized set of self defense strategies.
Self defense training is not just about teaching women kicks, punches and jabs to thwart an attack. Preventing crime on a college or corporate campus is the better tactic.
One of the best strategies to stay safe is to travel in groups of two or more people and stay in populated, well lit areas. This becomes more apparent because, according to Rice University Police Officer Sgt. Baylor, “83 percent of the time it is accessibility and availability of the target.. [that facilitates a crime being committed.]
So, if you’re a woman and in the market for self defense strategies, consider a program specifically tailored for your unique needs.
