Bullying can be effectively stopped by teaching responsibility for the well-being of others. That, according to Susan Engel and Marlene Sandstrom in a recent article in the New York Times, here.

But, is that all there is to stopping bullying? What about teaching responsibility for the well-being of ourselves? What about teaching that our emotional fitness is first and foremost, our individual responsibility?

Steps to Eliminate Bullying and More

Bullying. Information about how to effectively deal with bullying seems to be all over the place. Individuals and organizations have a range of opinion from “suck it up” to “do nothing, it’s not your fault.”

The answer usually lies in the middle. Bullying behavior is inappropriate. And the victim of bullying is responsible for their own feelings. Passing laws does not educate people about inappropriate behavior. And since bullying is subjective, no person’s bully is simply an obnoxious blow-hard to another.

Bullying: Local or Washington Solution?

Bullying is getting a lot of attention in the news. I hear the talking heads talking about the pros and cons of various approaches. What laws should be enacted to counter bullying and what actions should be taken.

That approach to bullying reminded me of my youth. Schools seemed much less complicated then. They didn’t have as many regulations, requirements, diversity training, sensitivity training, politically correct training, etc, that the have today.
