I was assisting at a woman’s self defense class and continued to observe the students practicing the various techniques in a timid, almost scared fashion.

While I can understand being timid when learning something new… it shouldn’t matter.  You attend self defense classes to learn how to defend yourself from sexual or violent assault.  You should be anything but timid.
