The Most Effective Method of Dealing with Bullies

Bullying is here to stay. No law of the land is going to eliminate repeated aggressive behavior that leaves someone feeling intimidated. It might not be what you want to hear, but as long as our government and other role models continue to engage in such behavior, we’ll continue to see others following their example.

Just because bullying is a fact of life does not mean you have to succumb to it. While I think passing laws to deal with bullying is counter-productive. Why? Bullying is subjective. Behavior deemed bullying by one person may be considered obnoxious to another.

Besides, these laws, like most, are political. It’s about courting votes and making people feel better. Laws don’t prevent crimes, they merely validate a victim’s mindset that they were a ‘victim.’ We have enough victims in this country. It’s about time we have some victors.

Here are some interesting approaches to bullying. I believe this first entry identifies the most effective method of dealing with bullies. When a peer group stands together and supports each other, there is strength in their numbers. Bullies may well think twice before harassing someone.

As the article on BP demonstrates, the US models bullying behavior often. When we bypass the rule of law and instead threaten or intimidate a corporation into a politically expedient response, the government could be considered guilty of bullying (and perhaps extortion).

Regardless, until groups band together, speak out and support each other, bullying will continue. But, when they do, you’ll see bullying type behavior begin to wane.
